DONEGAL TD Joe McHugh has welcomed a resolution of the Urris school bus dispute following representations to Minister Halligan.
Minister McHugh said last night: “This is a victory for common sense but also for the parents of school children in the area.”
The Donegal TD met Minister Halligan four weeks ago to press him again on the issue.
Parents were annoyed after a decision was taken that school children in one half of Urris had to attend secondary schools in Buncrana if they wished to avail of the school transport scheme.
This was due to the fact that eligibility for the scheme is determined by distance, with the department deeming Buncrana closer to Carndonagh for one half of Urris, via Mamore Gap.
But the gap can be a dangerous route, especially in the winter.
Minister McHugh added: “I want to thank Minister Halligan for reversing this decision and I want to pay tribute to all the families in Urris who have campaigned for this resolution today and I’m delighted the special circumstances in this case have been recognised.”
